OpenWay, UnionPay expand partnership to enable full UPI support on Way4
Global digital payment software provider OpenWay has expanded its strategic partnership with UnionPay International to provide complete support for UnionPay International products on its Way4 platform, enabling financial institutions worldwide to more easily deploy UnionPay-powered payment services.
The enhanced collaboration allows banks, processors and fintech companies using the Way4 platform to issue, acquire and tokenise UnionPay cards within a single integrated environment. Way4 is widely used by financial institutions to manage card issuing, payment acquiring, transaction switching and digital wallet services in real time. With the new support capabilities, OpenWay clients can accelerate the rollout of UnionPay services across multiple markets while maintaining operational consistency and efficiency.
As part of the expanded partnership, OpenWay has enabled what it describes as the first global launch of Big Pay functionality for UnionPay cards on the Way4 platform. The feature has been introduced with six major banks in Central Asia, marking the first time a UnionPay card has been integrated with a Big Pay system. The milestone highlights the region’s growing role as a testing ground for next-generation payment technologies.
Further Big Pay integrations are expected to be introduced soon, which will broaden the mobile payment and digital wallet options available to UnionPay cardholders using the Way4 platform.
OpenWay has played a significant role in implementing international payment scheme (IPS) solutions globally. The company powered the first issuance of a UnionPay card in Kazakhstan in 2004 using the Way4 platform, a development that helped accelerate the adoption of modern payment infrastructure across Central Asia.
Since then, cooperation between OpenWay and UnionPay International has led to several milestones in the region, including the introduction of UnionPay chip cards and the expansion of acquiring infrastructure.
Today, the Way4 platform is recognised for its capabilities in cross-border card scheme integration, digital wallet innovation, real-time payment processing and AI-driven payment solutions. The platform is designed to help financial institutions align global payment standards with local financial ecosystems while supporting the growing demand for digital and interoperable payment services.
Rustem Nurmambetov, Operational Director of OpenWay in Central Asia, said the partnership reflects the value of combining global technology with local expertise. He noted that many global fintech breakthroughs often originate from regional collaboration between technology providers and banking partners.
Through the strengthened partnership, OpenWay and UnionPay International aim to accelerate the development of modern, inclusive and interoperable payment systems in markets around the world. OpenWay and UnionPay International Expand Partnership to Deliver Full UPI Product Support on Way4
