Health Ministry launches JANANI platform for maternal, child healthcare

In a major push to strengthen maternal and child healthcare services, the Union Health Ministry has launched JANANI, a digital platform designed to track and maintain health records of women during their reproductive years and ensure continuity of care across pregnancy, childbirth and newborn care.

Launched at the National Summit on Innovation and Inclusivity- Best Practices Shaping India’s Health Future, JANANI, short for Journey of Antenatal, Natal and Neonatal Integrated Care, seeks to improve monitoring of maternal and child health services through real-time digital tracking, interoperable systems and targeted interventions.

Developed as an upgraded version of the existing Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) portal, the platform creates longitudinal digital health records by capturing service delivery events across the continuum of care. The Ministry said the platform is aimed at ensuring seamless tracking of antenatal care, delivery preparedness, postnatal services, newborn care, home-based newborn and young child care, and family planning services.

The rollout assumes significance as India continues to focus on improving maternal and child health outcomes through digital health systems and continuity of care mechanisms.

A key feature of JANANI is the introduction of QR-enabled digital Mother and Child Health (MCH) cards, which are designed to improve portability and accessibility of health records. The platform also includes automated alerts for high-risk pregnancies, due-list generation and real-time dashboards for supervisory review, enabling timely interventions and closer monitoring of beneficiaries.

The Ministry said JANANI has been designed with interoperability features that allow integration with national platforms such as U-WIN and POSHAN to facilitate seamless data exchange and coordinated beneficiary tracking across programmes.

The platform allows beneficiary registration through unique identifiers including ABHA, Aadhaar through OTP and biometric authentication, and mobile numbers. It also provides pan-India search functionality, aimed at ensuring continuity of care for migratory populations and reducing duplication of records.

JANANI additionally offers self-registration through web and mobile platforms, allowing beneficiaries to access digital MCH cards, receive alerts for antenatal care visits and immunisations, identify nearby healthcare facilities and access health education and nutritional guidance.

According to the Ministry, the platform has so far recorded 1.34 crore beneficiary registrations, over 30 lakh registrations of pregnant women, generation of more than 30 lakh MCH cards and over one lakh biometric verifications.

Officials said the platform represents a structural reform in maternal and child health administration by integrating digital authentication, real-time monitoring and inter-sectoral convergence to strengthen service coverage and accountability.

The Ministry said the launch of JANANI reflects the government’s focus on accessible, equitable and quality healthcare services through digital enablement and improved continuity of care for women and children.
